What To Do In San Diego Day Trip Itinerary

Home to the best beaches in the country, San Diego is a little slice of paradise you don’t want to miss. Although a day trip is not nearly enough time for you to enjoy everything there is to offer, this itinerary will take you through the biggest highlights of the area.

Morning:
8:00 AM — Start your day with breakfast at one of the many excellent breakfast spots in San Diego. Some popular options include The Mission, Breakfast Republic, or Hash House A Go Go.

9:00 AM — Head to Balboa Park, a massive urban park with a lot to explore. Spend your morning in the park:
 — Visit the San Diego Zoo, one of the most renowned zoos in the world. Allow a few hours for this.
 — Stroll through the beautiful gardens like the Botanical Building and the Japanese Friendship Garden.
 — Explore the many museums and cultural institutions within the park. Some notable ones are the San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Man.

Lunch:
12:30 PM — Enjoy lunch in Balboa Park at the Prado at Balboa Park, a delightful restaurant with a lovely patio setting.

Afternoon:
1:30 PM — Head to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This area is known as the “birthplace of California” and is a living museum. Explore the historic buildings, watch artisans at work, and learn about California’s early history.

3:00 PM — Make your way to the USS Midway Museum, a decommissioned aircraft carrier turned museum. You can explore the flight deck, hangar bays, and numerous aircraft, and gain a fascinating insight into naval history.

Late Afternoon:
5:00 PM — Drive or take a short ride to Coronado Island. Enjoy the beautiful beaches, take a walk along the stunning Coronado Beach, and perhaps grab a coffee or ice cream on Orange Avenue.

Evening:
7:00 PM — Head back to the mainland and have dinner at the Gaslamp Quarter, a historic district with many restaurants, bars, and entertainment options. There are various dining choices, from steakhouses to sushi, so pick a cuisine that suits your preference.

9:00 PM — After dinner, take a leisurely walk around the Gaslamp Quarter, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful architecture. If you’re interested in nightlife, you can explore the area’s bars and clubs.

Wrap Up:
10:00 PM — Head back to your starting point or accommodation to conclude your day trip to San Diego.
